I’ve had anxious moments my whole life. I think as a kid I didn’t realize what anxiety was, but I knew that I felt better when I was in control.

As I have gotten older I realize that the best way for me to work through my anxiety is to tackle the things I have control over.

Below are eight tips to help you work through your anxiety.

tips for working through your anxiety

1. Clean up messes.

When my space is cluttered my brain starts to feel cluttered and my anxiety starts to rise. This usually means throwing things out as well, and that means letting go of physical garbage which can help you start to give into your emotional garbage that needs to be dumped.

2. Update your calendars, check-in on your bank accounts, credit cards etc, and your bills.

I start to feel anxious when I think I might be forgetting something. Being aware of your financial picture can also help those anxious feeing stay away. When you know what you have to work with budget wise you are more prepared to make better financial decisions.

3. Toss the phone/ get rid of the noise.

Our phones can keep us connected to family and friends but let’s be real, they can also control us. When I start to feel anxious I know one of the first things I need to do is spend less time on my phone. There is so much data and research that proves we are addicted to the tiny little machines we can fit in our pocket. Limiting your time on your phone for the day as well as with each usage can really help your well being.

4. Go for a walk.

Get outside! Fresh air and a new environment can do wonders for your mental health. Getting away from all technology and all the stressors in your home can really help to clear your head and gain some perspective. And, we know that getting your endorphins going helps boost your mood.

5. Talk to family and friends, just catch up.

We can start to feel anxious when we feel disconnected from the world as well as our loved ones. You don’t need to talk to you family and friends about your anxiety if you don’t feel comfortable, just reaching out and connecting can help. {Unless your family makes your blood pressure rise! If that is the case do what is best for you!}

6. Journal.

I have to admit, journaling is hard for me. But I know the value of getting my feelings and emotions down on paper. I also think list making can help reduce anxiety. List all that is swirling around in your brain. Writing it down gives you permission to let it go.

7.Use affirmations.

Help your mindset shift by reading and repeating affirmations out loud. “If someone says something out loud, it’s ten times more powerful than if they think it.” – @TrevorMoawad⠀How incredible is that! Just by saying at affirmation out loud it more powerful. I wrote a post here that lays out how to use affirmation cards.

8. Go to therapy.

THERAPY is not a bad word. I am a HUGE advocate for therapy, I think we could all benefit from therapy. If you feel like your anxiety is crippling and you can’t manage it yourself I so encourage you to reach out and get professional help. You can ask you primary doctor, OB, or even friends for a recommendation.
